If we had to give it a designation, 2009 would be the Year of the Boat & Baby (in chronological order, not order of importance).
2009 got off to a bang with fireworks on frozen Long Lake in Jen’s hometown of Willow, Alaska. From there the year just got more exciting.

After the holidays, Jen’s law firm gave her time off to study for and take the WA Bar exam (she passed). Despite the time off, studying was absolute agony. Jen hopes to never take another bar exam. And, turns out it wasn’t just nerves making her feel a little hinky during the exam: she was pregnant. To celebrate the news and the end of the bar exam, we went skiing at Whistler in British Columbia (home of the 2010 Winter Olympics).
In March, we bought a sailboat, a 2004 Hunter 356. We named it Iguazu after the waterfalls where we got engaged. Our first sail took us from Seattle’s Lake Union to Anacortes, the boat’s new home and a great place from which to explore the San Juan Islands. Making the trip through the Ballard Locks with our new purchase was nerve-racking, but the boat made the passage unscathed.
Except for trips to San Francisco, Alaska for Jen and D.C. for Jake, we spent nearly every weekend on the boat. Iguazu became a weekly respite from our jobs (although, Jake figured out how to watch KIRO on the boat). We even took our summer vacation on it, doing a week-long exploration of Canada’s Gulf Islands. Despite seeing all sorts of sea life--including starfish, seals, sea lions and all manner of birds--orcas alluded us until July, when we finally caught up with them.
The biggest news of our year arrived on October 21st. Willow is now closing in on three months old, delighting us with her smiles and new-found ability to sleep all night!
