Whistler MLK Weekend 2014
For MLK weekend, we headed north to Whistler/Blackcomb for a 3 day getaway. Our NEXUS cards got us through the border’s one hour line in 5 minutes. And, we arrived around 10:30 on Friday night. We finally got to use our Four Season’s gift card (a wedding present from Dara and Bryan). The Four Seasons is dog-friendly, so Gabby got to join us. We could easily get used to the Four Seasons’ service! When we arrived, they greeted Willow with a stuffed animal and our room (free upgrade to a suite) included dog bowls filled with bottled water and organic treats for Gabby. We spent our first day X-country skiing at Callaghan, which had off-leash dog friendly ski trails. We rented both skis and a trailer for Willow. Willow tried her hand at skiing and surprisingly seemed to really get into it. Although, she settled into the trailer for the bulk of the ride with her Nexus pad. Jen successfully pulled her up and down hills with nary a spill. Gabby had a blast romping in the snow and with other dogs. When we finished the trail, Willow wanted to ski some more so she spent the next hour working on her skills. We got back to the hotel just in time for a hot chocolate in the lobby. Then, we hit the outdoor pool, which was a little cool but thankfully had a child-friendly hot tub. We had a late dinner at the hotel next door (over priced and mediocre).
The next day, we went for a stroll around the village and then parked Willow and Gabby with a babysitter while we hit the slopes. It was a gorgeous sunny day and despite Jen’s legs feeling a big tired early on, we managed to ski until the lifts closed after a brief break at the top for lunch. We watched a bit of the Seahawks - Niners game and then headed to the hot tub for a toddy and to soak our tired muscles. Then, we returned to watch Seahawks win the division championship and a pizza delivery. We were having so much fun, we decided to stay an extra night.
The next morning, we got up early and took Willow to try out downhill skiing. She seemed to really enjoy the magic carpet and managed to mostly get the hang of putting her skis in the V position. She stuck with it for about 45 minutes. Then, we took the gondola up to the tubing hill for an hour of fun blasting down the slopes at 80 miles an hour. Willow loved it! After that, we headed for home.
