My Birth Story
After nine months in captivity, my quarters were getting pretty tight.  I simply couldn’t wait any longer; I decided to make my appearance three days before my October 24th due date.  My Mom’s water broke at about 6:30 am while she was sitting at the breakfast table eating a bowl of cereal.  At first, she wasn’t quite sure what was going on.  She had planned to work from home that day, so she started working as if nothing had happened.  A couple of hours later, as her water continued to leak, she decided to go ahead and call the doctor.   They told her to come in, so they could check to make sure I was doing OK.  The ultrasound showed me to be fit as a fiddle, my heartbeat strong.  With this assurance, my parents headed home to try to take care of some unfinished business.   They were in the midst of making some changes to the furniture in their apartment.  My mom’s contractions weren’t strong; she was just feeling a little crampy.  So, she and my dad got to work trying to put things in order before my arrival. My dad actually had the presence of mind to put together an Ikea dresser--no easy feat under the best of conditions.  Around dinner time, my mom’s contractions started to get a bit stronger, but they still weren’t regular, so my parents stayed at home.  A couple of hours later, around 8:30 pm, my mom’s contractions still weren’t regular, but they were getting very strong, so my parents finally decided to go to the hospital.   At the hospital, my mom hopped in a futuristic bathtub (called a Parker tub).  Turns out it was a little too advanced for the nurse; we managed to completely flood the bathroom when a lever holding the tub in place was released and the tub accidentally up-ended.  My mom didn’t see the humor in the situation until later.  After switching rooms, my mom spent another hour or so in the tub and then it was time for me to make my debut.  Just 20 minutes later, there I was all pink and bright-eyed, resting on my mom’s chest.  And, so my life on the outside begins...
