4th of July
Orcas at Last!
We took advantage of the three day weekend to continue our quest for orcas. But first, we anchored for the night at Deer Harbor on Orcas Island to catch the 3rd of July fireworks show. We got up early the next morning and headed along the western side of San Juan Island down Haro Strait toward Lime Kiln Point to look for Orcas. Finding none, we thought we’d been skunked again, but just past False Bay, we spotted a group of boats. As we got closer, we saw why: Orcas! We ended up watching them pass for at least 2 hours and figure we saw 20 or more of them. After the show, we headed to Lopez Island’s Hunter Bay where we anchored for the night. After a spin around the bay at sunset, we settled in for the night and even managed to catch a few fireworks in the distance, probably being shot off in Anacortes and maybe Bellingham.
