My Story as told to Grandma Bonnie:

A Booby Meany Monster
Once upon a time, there was a big Booby Juney Monster and he stomped in his forest and found a snail and the snail was scared and he went back into his shell.

And then the sunshine came out and the monster ran back to his home.  Then it started to rain and the teeny, tiny monster went to the snail’s home and the snail went to the monster’s home where they both had hot cocoa.

Then Grandpa Elliott came and booby dumbo dumbibo.  And then bimpie bonked his head.  And then the really big Booby Newbie came and ate the monster.

Then the puppy dog squeaked his clicker and stood at the top of his stairs all night.  Then Bibbie Cup and Jeannie and Poppy looked for him and they remembered he had gone grocery shopping to make gack.

The End

Willow took the initiative to read her first book tonight.  It was a Trucktown Book called Kate’s Mystery Gift from the Ballard Library  She worked really hard at sounding out the words, but got pretty tired midway through.

For Science

When I was born, my parents were asked if they would allow me to participate in University of Washington research projects.  Still in the euphoric state caused by my arrival, they immediately agreed.  Over the years, we’ve gotten only a few calls to participate.  One such recent call was for a cranial facial normative study being conducted through Children’s Hospital.  Mommy and I headed over on Friday morning.  On arrival, I was presented with a stocking cap and various points on my face were marked with dots.  Then, they took several photographs of my head, which were used to produce a very cool 3D image of my head.  Next, they asked me to spit what seemed like a gallon of saliva into two vials.  Despite the fact that all week I’d been showing off the saliva bubbles I’m capable of creating by spitting them into my hand and displaying them for my parents, when the pressure was on, I found it hard to produce.  The lab technician resorted to putting sugar on my tongue to produce saliva.  This helped but it still took me at least a 1/2 hour to reach the goal.  Boy was I thirsty after that!

First Haircut

We went to the mall today and after spending some time in the play area, I decided (with my parents’ encouragement) that I was ready to have my locks cut for the first time.  All-in-all, it was a pretty enjoyable experience.  I had to sit very still while my stylist worked.  My mom was reading to me, but really I just wanted to watch the progress on my cut.  My stylist finished off with a cute little side braid, a bow and some glitter.  I felt like a star!  And, I got a fun prize for being so good--a pin-wheel! Daddy should consider getting his haircut here.  A little glitter would really freshen up his look.

Artiste?

My artistic talents have really taken a leap forward.  I am drawing inanimate objects like leaves and the sun, and I’ve got the basics of drawing people.  Sometimes I like to get creative with the facial features in the style of Picasso.

Why?

I have encountered a new and extremely effective tool in my quest for knowledge.  This new means of gathering information is elegant in its simplicity and consistent in its effect.  It is the question: “why?” Uttered repeatedly and frequently, it is the perfect retort to every statement.  And thus far, it seems to spur parents and other adults to perform near verbal acrobatics in a quest to respond. Their answers to this probing and insightful question, not surprisingly, often lead me to again ask: “why?”  Interestingly, I have learned that the quality of the response has an inverse relationship to the number of times the question is asked.  Typically, I know I have reached the limits of parental knowledge when the answer is simply: “because.”

Diaper me!

Despite giving my parents some early indications that I was ready to make the move from diaper to “underwears,” I have decided of late that diapers are superior.  Unlike underwear, I don’t get my shoes wet if I miscalculate my next toilet stop.  My diaper allows me the freedom to go whenever and wherever I want and thanks to the wicking technology, I don’t even notice.  I don’t know why everyone isn’t wearing them--think how much more productive adults would be if they didn’t have to stop what they were doing to run to the bathroom.  My parents seem resigned to my diaper preference.  At school, I still like to make trips to the bathroom with my friends for the camaraderie, but I know that I’ve got the better system.

Potty Time

Per my request, my parents will no longer post pictures of me on the pot.  I have, however, agreed to let them boast of my accomplishments on the throne.  To toot my own horn a bit--I have had some pretty heady successes.  I have on at several occasions, witnessed by my parents, gone pee-pee on the toilet.  Twice, I did the deed on a public toilet.  And, today, drum roll, please... I did a poo-poo in my potty!  My parents were stunned, and I must admit, was a bit surprised myself.  I have to give some credit to Alice, my best friend at school.  She started using the potty pretty regularly (she’s several months older than me), and I found myself wanting to find out what all the excitement was about.  My parents are, as you might expect, jubilant.

A Little Self-ish

There comes a time when a self-respecting toddler must shed the oppressive yoke of parent coddling and strike out on her own to test her mettle in the game of life--that time has come for this toddler.  When my parents try to help me put on my shoes or my diaper, navigate stairs, turn on lights, close the garage door, use keys, walk a crowded sidewalk, cross the street, pour juice, push elevator buttons, drive the car, I give them a loud firm reminder--”SELF!”--that I prefer and am quite capable (in some cases) of doing for myself.  Sometimes I have to be firm: “Go away, Mommy/Daddy, go away!”  My parents tell me that I shouldn’t say such things, but this reaction just makes me more insistent.
